“Fly” (as in “knowing and sharp, smart”) is rarely now used in Britain, but it has an enduring currency in north America. Asked to find a word to sum up the Neptunes, many might opt for “ubiquitous” or “overstretched”, and both terms will probably typify critical reaction to Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams’s new album. As producers, they are everywhere, and not always advantageously: on dire new albums from Madonna and Ashlee Simpson, they sound casual to the point of burnout. Discard such baggage, though, and “fly” pretty much describes Seeing Sounds, as the duo – alongside Shae Haley – fires on all cylinders. The frat-rock of Windows, the sectionable Everyone Nose, Yeah You’s lissom jazz, the 1960s pop of Sooner or Later and Love Bomb’s hazy psych-soul are some of the best things the Neptunes have done in ages. Ubiquitous they may be, but here they’re buzzing.”
