I’ve been a fan of KAWS for a long time – for reasons being that I’ve been in the ad industry for years and THIS guy is GENIUS when it comes to co-branding. Totally ahead of his time. Warhol did his thing as he tapped into the ad world also, but KAWS is STREET. He’s surfaced into mainstream with an underground presence that is still RAW to me. Speaking of street, KAWS fans were lined up in droves wrapping around Venice and La Cienega Blvds, and we were blessed with a light drizzle just to make the scene that much more dramatic. Mmm hmmm, I was salty, pissy, whatever. Yeah, I cut the line, (cuz I’m that person) so there would be only 200 people in front of me and waited 1.5 hours to move all of 10 ft. Nope, didn’t get in the gallery (not even close) and didn’t want to fight with the old-a@@ red wine drunken snob friends of the gallery whose faces were glued to the glass at the door. BUMMER for Sommer. Damn. KAWS is worth coming back for, even if the second time around I don’t get to see/meet the artist, which is the appeal of the opening, to share that experience ya know?
Good news is that I was surrounded by good energy and like-minded individuals while standing in line in the rain. Photographers, fashion designers, musicians, and we kinda made a party out of the f@ckedupness. Was fun, actually. We turned it into a movement of people STOKED to see a GINORMOUS turn-out for KAWS! Bill McMullin was hardly as packed but sooooo cool. I felt like I walked onto a b-ball court hip-hopera as I walked in (fisted backboard) and then I see huge canvases with tape patterns, boom box stand-alones, astronaut suits in skittle colors and most importantly, smiling faces. Was worth coming out for, and the crowds that McCullen and KAWS attract are interestingly the same kinds you see at N.E.R.D. shows and b-boy battles and even sushi bars and plays. (Hipsters – but not the annoying ones, and counter-culture) Thanks for keeping us posted, BBCblog peeps!
